Analysis:
"A Separation" intertwines the ethics of love and affection at the personal level with the differences in class at the social level, and shows the gap and conflict between the relatively wealthy, westernized middle class and the poorly educated, religiously observant laborers of contemporary Iranian society.
The film utilizes a cool and objective narrative technique and shows the state of existence of contemporary Iranians through a camera language full of concern. It seems to tell the story of one family, but in essence, it reflects the status quo of the entire Iranian society, and shows the entanglement between affection and ethics, morality and law, tradition and modernity in the best possible way.
The film explores topics that are more closely related to the lives of ordinary people: the conflict between love and affection, the question of whether or not to leave one's father, who suffers from senile dementia, the mutual suspicion between an employer and his maid, the conflict between family members in a broken marriage, and the lack of trust between parents and their children, which can cause the audience's ****tion.
"A Separation at a Time" Synopsis:
Simin (Leila Khatami) wants to leave Iran in order for her daughter to get a better education. She is prepared to do almost anything to help, but her husband, Nader (Peyman Moadi), thinks differently; he has a father with Alzheimer's disease to take care of, and he can't just walk away. In a fit of anger, Simin takes Nader to court and asks for a divorce.
Distraught, Simin returns to her mother's house. After losing Simin, Nader finds his life in a mess. As a last resort, he hires a female laborer (Rizsare Bayat) to take care of his father, only to find out that Rizsare is not only neglecting his father, but also tying him to his bed. Enraged, Nader pushes Ritz out the door and Ritz slips down the stairs, accidentally causing a miscarriage.
