Why do women in Hong Kong take their husband's name?
The phenomenon of women taking their husband's name.
An expert on family issues and associate professor at the Department of Applied Social Sciences of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Chan Wo Chung, talks about the situation of married women in Hong Kong taking their husbands' surnames. Chan Wo Chung believes that this is a phenomenon of women taking their husbands' names, but says that although it is common for traditional women to take their husbands' surnames in Hong Kong, the new generation of women taking their husbands' surnames is significantly less common.
Democratized families are also becoming more common nowadays. However, Associate Professor Chan explained that the relevant statistics in the past few years showed that among all the domestic violence cases in Hong Kong, cases of husbands hitting their wives accounted for 90% of the total, while wives hitting their husbands only accounted for 10%. It shows the gender inequality in the direction of domestic violence.

"It's all a thing of the past. It's hard for me to say what the reason was. We were very serious about changing our ID cards and passports. Anson Chan and Rita Fan Hsu all took their husband's name. Most married female officials now, however, don't take their husband's name anymore."
