Plot introduction
From the perspective of rehabilitating Sioux Indians, the film describes that American white officer Dunbar was voluntarily sent to the western front line after the Civil War, and as a result, he made friends with Sioux soldiers with different languages and cultures, and both sides paid off. Later, the local White Army regarded him as a traitor and strongly opposed him. From then on, Dunbar was ashamed to be a white man, devoted himself to the Sioux camp and insisted on his name "Dancing with Wolves".
Captain Dunbar was a hero in the Civil War, but he wanted to find a new way of life, so he rode mathis Branch to the magical west. Dunbar was sent to the most remote "West Wake" post by Major Van Blue of "Hayes Fortress". Dunbar lived alone in an unmanned post, and he was deeply attracted by the grandeur of the prairie.
Soon Major Van Bure committed suicide, and his coachman was killed by Indians because of parnice, so Dunbar lost contact with the outside world. Yuan Ye, the boundless sky, seems to be his paradise. Dunbar lived a quiet and monotonous life, made friends with a wolf with white front legs and named it "two white socks"
After Dunbar came into contact with Sioux Indians, life was no longer calm. Sioux people have been talking about Dunbar's arrival, and they are arguing about how to treat Dunbar. Dunbar decided to take the initiative to find the Sioux. On the way, he saved a Sioux woman who wanted to commit suicide. She is also white, but she lost her relatives and was adopted by the Sioux. After returning the "standing dance boxing" to the Sioux, Dunbar rode away. Dunbar's visit greatly shocked the Sioux people, and Indian leaders unanimously agreed to pay a return visit to Dunbar. The next day, several Indians came to Dunbar station. In this way, the two sides began a slow and friendly contact, and gradually Dunbar became a friend of the Sioux. He also has an Indian name "Dancing with Wolves".
His riding skills and marksmanship when hunting bison impressed the Sioux, and later he saved an Indian boy. Soon, he moved into the Sioux camp and began to become one of them. At the same time, there is a sincere feeling between Dunbar and "Standing Dance Boxing". When the ferocious Pani attacked, Dunbar tried his best to distribute the guns and ammunition in the post to the Sioux to help them defeat the enemy. Dunbar became a Sioux hero again. All Sioux people worship Dunbar very much, and they wish Dunbar love and union with "standing dance boxing". Dunbar also deeply realized the simplicity, kindness and friendliness of Indians, and he lived freely and happily among Sioux people. Dunbar is a complete Indian except for his skin color and appearance.
However, just when Dunbar wanted to go to the post to retrieve his diary and live among the Indians forever, he found that a group of white soldiers had been stationed there. They shot Dunbar in Indian costumes. Mathis died and Dunbar became a prisoner. Dunbar's defense of Indians attracted many insults and beatings. They identified Dunbar as a traitor. So Dunbar stopped speaking English and resolutely spoke Indian. The garrison major could do nothing, so he had to send a team of soldiers to escort Dunbar back to "Hayes fortress". When the Sioux discovered that Dunbar was arrested, they destroyed the motorcade and rescued Dunbar.
When winter came, the Sioux settled down in the deep valley. In order not to bring trouble to Sioux friends, Dunbar declined to stay and left Sioux village with his wife "standing, dancing and boxing". Eighteen years later, the Sioux were forced to sign an agreement with the government to give up their land passed down from generation to generation.

This is an epic film reflecting the history of the western regions. Through his perspective, the audience can gradually penetrate into the unfamiliar Indian society, culture, customs, daily life and even the inner world of its representatives, and can also see the grassland scenery in western vast expanse. Dunbar's melancholy, arrogant temperament and lonely lifestyle coincide with the values of quietism and the supremacy of personality in Taoist culture, which inadvertently narrowed the distance between different nationalities. The scene of hunting cattle in the film is magnificent.
Dancing with Wolves is the first film directed by kevin scott Werner. The film lasted nearly 4 hours and cost $6.5438+0.8 million. It is a large-scale epic western film, with 3500 bison, 300 horses, more than 654.38+030 technicians and 400 extras. It is also the first film with Indian subtitles in American film history. Kevin Slatner said: "What I want to show is the Indian experience at that time, and it is a history of indigenous people." He insists that the film must have Indian subtitles, and he is confident that this will inevitably arouse people's strong interest, concern and support. Sure enough, he succeeded. At the premiere, he invited many Indians to watch the film. Three hours passed, and the applause in the cinema was thunderous and prolonged.
Dancing with wolves has become an immortal western legend in the history of world movies with its unique perspective and connotation. Dancing with Wolves was a blockbuster at the 63rd Academy Awards, with 12 nominations, and finally won seven awards, namely, best film, best director, best adaptation, best photography, best editing, best sound effect and best music, which attracted worldwide attention. Kevin scott boldly adopted the western film style which has been ignored for more than ten years, and examined the complex themes of culture, history, race and equality from a brand-new perspective. The diversification of films has injected fresh and powerful vitality into western films. He revived a genre and achieved brilliant success. Although the film adopts the legendary narrative story structure, what is different is that the film skillfully combines the realistic style with the romantic color and emotional appeal, which makes the whole film have gorgeous artistic charm. And the film also has a wonderful pen in shooting technology. It perfectly combines the rich historical and cultural atmosphere with the magnificent scenery of the western prairie. Rich photographic angles, clever dynamic rhythm and complex and excellent scene scheduling make the film achieve excellent visual effects. But the real success of the film should also be attributed to its profound theme connotation. With the end of World War II, humanitarianism has been mentioned in a considerable position in literature and art, and historical reflection has made the theme of war and the history of western development two major themes in movies. Dancing with wolves reflects the history and thinking of this western expansion, which is extremely difficult to grasp and express. People are paying more and more attention to the plight of Indians. This film is contrary to previous films, especially western films, which describe Indians as barbarians, and affirms the simplicity, sincerity and kindness of Indians. The film also puts forward the ideal that all ethnic groups should give up their struggle and live in peace, and embodies the freedom and beauty of this ideal with the harmonious coexistence of Dunbar people and Sioux people, playing the melody of friendship, equality and peace. These artistic successes finally made the film a brilliant victory in the Oscar competition.
Wonderful tidbits
At the beginning of the movie, two doctors are examining John Dunbar. The man standing at the table is body double of kevin costner. The two people who play doctors are actually the producers of this film. On the left is Jim Wilson, and on the right is director and starring kevin costner. The voices are matched by other actors.
Due to the weather, all the scenes in the film were shot in chronological order, except that the civil war at the beginning of the film was shot at the end.
Dunbar and the wind in his hair became good friends and exchanged gifts at the celebration dinner of hunting bison. These scenes were shot in Qusitter's trailer, because it was too cold outside.
When Dunbar rode to meet his friend, he saw a man who initially told the wolf to go away. This man is really an animal trainer. In the chase, his leg was bitten by a wolf. Costner had to run away in the next scene, because he was going to throw a large piece of raw meat to the wolf and save the animal trainer from the wolf.
Costner's daughter Anne costner played "standing boxing" as a child. In her dream, she recalled the scene of her family being killed, and she could be seen fleeing from the Boni Indians. She ran and looked back twice, because costner told her to look back from her right shoulder, but she didn't know which side was the left shoulder and which side was the right shoulder. Annie is only six years old.
Graham greene plays Bird, the adoptive father fund of "Standing Boxing". In fact, "standing boxing" Mary Mike Denville is two months older than Green.
Graham greene plays Fund Bird in the film, and also plays Edgar Monches in another film, The Red and Green Show (1991). In one scene, Edgar mentioned "Dancing with Wolves" and said that "Kikkin Bird" should win an Oscar.
The film was over budget, so costner had to make up for it with his own money. This makes the outside world rumored that this is another runaway western film, just like the disappointing Gate of Heaven (1980). Therefore, some insiders ridiculed the film as "Kevin's Gate". In the end, as a western film, this film won the Oscar for best film. The western film West Malone (193 1) recently won an award, more than 50 years ago.
In order to increase the realistic color of the film, a linguist was specially hired to teach actors who can't speak Lakota to learn to speak Lakota. Because this language is very complicated, the grammatical knowledge of "gender language" is omitted in the teaching process. After the film, Lakota-speaking aborigines were overjoyed to see the Lakota warrior talking like a sissy in the film.
Wonderful dialogue
John Dunbar: The strangeness of this life is immeasurable: I was promoted to the status of a living hero when trying to make my own death.
Ten bears: Let's smoke for a while.
John Dunbar: [voiceover] In Ten Bears, it's always longer than a while. Everything he does has a purpose, and I know he wants me to stay. But I have confidence in myself. I'll be an excuse, that's all the troops need to find this place. I tried my best to push him to move the camp. But in the end, he just smiled and talked about simple happiness. He reminded me that at his age, a good fire is better than anything. Ten bears are an extraordinary person.
-
Officer Bauer: You became an Indian, didn't you?
-
Kicking bird: I was just thinking that among all the trajectories in life, one is the most important. This is the trace of a real person. I think you're on this road, and I'm glad to see that.
A (movie) fiasco
Continuity: The size of beef jerky Dunbar fed to wolves has been changing, or it may be because he changed the way to take beef jerky.
Anachronism: The flag that John Dunbar waved when he met the Indians appeared at the wrong time.
Fact error: it is impossible for tribal members to quote proverbs or expressions similar to formulas in the Bible, because these tribes have been committed to protecting oral knowledge and traditional culture.
Fact error: Three birds flying across the sky are thought to be swans, but in fact they should be cranes.
Anachronism: The pigeons in the old fortress were Eurasian pigeons with collars, which could not have appeared in North America at that time.
Error found: When Dunbar fired with 1860 Henry rifle, he could see that the ammunition barrel indicator was in the rearmost position, that is, it was empty. This kind of situation always appears in movies.
Anachronism: You can see power lines when hunting bison.
Found a mistake: After the Sioux rescued John Dunbar by the stream, one of the Sioux passed by the dead Spivey and threw some water on his face, and Spivey came back to life.
Continuity: When Dunbar observed two buildings, his stubble was very short. When he walked from building to building, his beard seemed to have grown for three or four days.
Behind the film: the elegy of American westward history
Westerns once occupied an important position in Hollywood and even the world film history. They run through the history of American movies with lofty sentiments and the courage to swallow mountains and rivers, reappearing chapter after chapter of glorious history and producing heroes and heroic deeds from generation to generation. However, after the 1980s, it seems that the New Hollywood era no longer favors western films, and new types of films, such as urban gangster films and space science fiction films, have taken over the themes and techniques of western films and won the audience of the younger generation.
From 65438 to 0990, Dancing with Wolves, which was directed and starred by the brave explorer kevin costner for the first time, was a brilliant success, sweeping the Oscar of that year and shocking the world cinema. It not only reawakens people's memory and attention to the heroes in the west, but also takes the neglected and ugly Indian tribes in the old western movies as the protagonists with a brand-new angle and viewpoint, and reproduces their unknown true colors and sincere feelings.
For the first time, the film completely reproduces the simple and innocent life of Indians a century ago, boldly exposes the crimes of genocide and destruction of Indian culture committed by the American government, and has a revolutionary impact on the narrative theme of Hollywood westerns. Costner abandoned the nostalgia of westerns, and the whole film flaunted a brand-new sense of self, which made westerns reappear in Hollywood.
In the passionate interpretation of nearly four hours, kevin costner showed admirable professional ethics and professional standards. He not only boldly subverted the tradition of white supremacy in western films, but also completely broke the racial boundaries through realism, objectively described and evaluated ethnic minorities from an equal perspective, praised traditional virtues such as simplicity, hard work and courage, and affirmed and supported the peaceful, friendly and mutually beneficial way of getting along, which made it full of romanticism. The film even questioned the history of the development of the western region to some extent, accusing the barbaric wars and struggles. The progressive ideas and profound connotations expressed in Dancing with Wolves have not only been highly praised by the mainstream society, but also aroused unprecedented fierce response among ethnic tribes, especially Indian aborigines, so kevin costner has won universal respect.
