The sound of the bamboo harp

-Interview with Pan, a Quyi performance artist.

What kind of folk art is Zhu Qin? When modern people look back on Zhu Qin, how did the older generation of folk artists inherit this folk art?

The origin of bamboo harp

"I loathe to give up the green tile house, which is cool in summer and warm in winter, and I loathe to give up the twists and turns of the stone road. Reluctant to the green in the yard, reluctant to the clear and sweet water in the ancient well. I can't bear the affection of my neighbors and I can't bear to sleep with my friends. "

On a rainy day in June, the air was sultry. Passing through a winding alley on the Trump card road in Wanzhou City, melodious songs with strong local accent come and go, making people speechless. Looking around, in a beautifully decorated 3-bedroom apartment, a performer wearing a white double-breasted shirt and cloth shoes, with elegant steps, is enjoying singing, singing and piano sounds beautiful. The performer is Pan, former head of Chongqing Three Gorges Quyi Troupe, who is singing the endangered Three Gorges Zhu Qin.

"A bamboo is green and dripping, growing in the mountains; The ancient fairy bamboo piano was originally expensive, and the poem was different from the bamboo sound. " Pan told reporters that as a traditional and ancient form of Quyi performance, Zhuqin was produced during the Qing Jiaqing period. Because the sound of the bamboo harp is nearly "pound" and the sound of the simple board is like "foot", it is called "foot pound" by the people. Zhu Qin is the most popular in eastern Chongqing. At the beginning of last century, there were special artists from Zhu Qin in Wanzhou District of Chongqing. 1927, Sichuan Zhu Qin conference was held in liangping county, and the number of participants exceeded 1000. The folk songs of "Three and a half heroes in Liangshan" and "Listening to songs along the river" have been circulating for a long time. Speaking of this history, Pan's eyes sparkled. At that time, the art of bamboo and piano was rooted in the masses of the people and popular in rural alleys, restaurants and teahouses. Where there are teahouses, there are bamboo artists and lovers singing bamboo programs or learning singing skills.

At the beginning of the last century, because the bamboo harp won the favor of people all over the Three Gorges reservoir area, a large number of artists or fans entertained themselves in teahouses and alleys in urban areas, and more folk artists supported themselves by bamboo harp in rural areas. They go from village to village, perform at the edge of the ridge during the day, and play at the fireplace in the farmhouse at night. The villagers in Shiliba Township always come to watch the fun. At that time, the bamboo harp became a rare music in the countryside, which not only cultivated the sentiment of the villagers, but also found a true simplicity and love in the performance and expression of the performers.

"I think the art of the bamboo harp is very infectious. It can cultivate people's sentiments and bring us joy. " It is because of his love for the bamboo piano that 1989, Pan took the lead in holding a special performance of "Happy Everyone" in the building. However, as the wheel of history rolls forward, people's aesthetic tastes and needs have changed greatly. Under the competition of various art forms, the brilliance of the bamboo and piano art is no longer forgotten by people, and now it has come to the brink of extinction.

Zhu Qin's experience and scope.

Like other Quyi, Zhu Qin, as a native Quyi in Sichuan Basin and Three Gorges Reservoir Area, has been rooted among the people since its birth and is very popular in villages, restaurants and teahouses. When describing the Anbaili Uprising in Qing Dynasty, bamboo harp (also called fishing drum in Hubei) and simple wooden board were prepared, and the description of "good words" was rapped at night as a powerful weapon to inspire the poor people who could not bear oppression and exploitation at that time. Earlier, during the temple fair, Taoists played and sang immortals of Han Xiangzi and Lv Dongbin with bamboo harps to promote Taoist teachings. In the past, there were many Zhu Qin programs that told stories about loyal subjects, dutiful sons, the Three Cardinals and the Five Permits, and karma. Its essence is to conform to the feudal ethics and ideology advocated by the feudal ruling class, so as to restrain and paralyze the people. At that time, most of the bamboo players were not voluntary, so the way and type of playing were full of sadness and humiliation.

With the development of the times and society, the content of bamboo harp has undergone qualitative changes, and at the same time, there have been changes and innovations in playing methods.

Brilliance of bamboo piano

As a unique folk art, the bamboo piano once had a brilliant page. Legend of China (chapter 16) is a piano work with more than 80,000 words and more than 500 minutes. This is a rare masterpiece in the Zhuqin program. Based on the novel of the same name by Gong Ge and Kong Bi, The Legend of Flowers tells the story of Hua's heroic struggle with the enemy in Baigongguan prison and his escape from Baigongguan to the liberated area. In the 1990s, after the original Wanxian Quyi Troupe undertook the performance of this masterpiece, Pan, then the head of the troupe, organized more than 30 performers. On the basis of maintaining the original singing form and style in composition, he used the theme music of traditional Chinese opera (Jiang Jie) and absorbed the musical materials of Sichuan Opera, dulcimer, voiceless and folk songs, enriching the melody and artistic expression of singing. On the orchestration, the single accompaniment tool of the bamboo harp was changed, and instruments such as dulcimer, pipa, Gao Hu, Zhonghu, Sanxian and cello were used for accompaniment, which made the music in the play closer to the scene, set off the atmosphere and enriched the level and thickness of singing. After such careful preparation, the performance of the program "Flower Legend" aroused strong repercussions from all walks of life, and all parties received rave reviews. After the program was broadcast on Sichuan People's Broadcasting Station; Approved by the audience and authoritative experts, five of them were included in "Integration of Chinese Folk Music", and the program also won many awards.

The success of the performance of the whole "Flower Legend" has been called an epoch-making revolution of Sichuan's reform and innovation by many music authorities. 1995, CCTV Oriental Time and Space Team went to Wan Wan to shoot Zhu Qin's album "Wonderful Grand View-Zhu Qin". After the album was played, the bamboo piano went to the whole country as a folk art.

Pan Zhengguang likes the bamboo piano. In 1980s and 1990s, when he was the head of Quyi Troupe, in order to save this declining Quyi, he specially built a building at the bridge head of the former Wan 'an Bridge, named "Yinqin Building", in order to prosper the Quyi of the Three Gorges. Yin Qin architecture was once famous in the Three Gorges and became an art brand .. But with the rising of the river, the Qinqu Building has disappeared, and few people can make a good bamboo piano.

Help save the bamboo harp

Facing the decline of the unique folk art in the Three Gorges, Pan, as the vice chairman of Chongqing Quyi Artists Association and the chairman of Wanzhou Quyi Artists Association, thinks he is duty-bound. He boldly proposed to save the bamboo harp and the art belonging to the people of the Three Gorges, mainly through reform.

Pan believes that with the diversified development of national music; It is not realistic to rely on a single performance, but it is necessary to exist as a local folk art. He believes that reform should be carried out in many ways. The first is the form of singing; The traditional singing form of bamboo harp is generally sitting singing, and the actor sings by himself, which greatly restricts the actor's performance and weakens the appeal of art. He thinks that sitting singing should be changed to standing singing or walking singing. Secondly, we should reform the singing method. The traditional singing methods of Zhuqin are: nine boards and thirteen cavities, generally including "one character", "second rate", "three boards", "counting boards" and "five boards"; There are 13 kinds of voices, such as roar, shout, talk, laugh, joy, anger, sorrow, joy, big cavity, sweeping cavity, bitter cavity, coloratura and colorful cavity. These vocals are suitable for singing traditional programs, but now they are monotonous, dull and expressionless. He believes that, as a folk art in the Three Gorges, the bamboo piano should be eclectic with other folk music arts in the Three Gorges, and its performance forms should be diversified. The third is the reform of accompaniment. The traditional bamboo harp is sung by the actors themselves without any music accompaniment. It looks slow and flat today, which is unattractive. He thinks that when the single-part music can no longer meet people's appreciation needs, subjective music should be added to the bamboo piano.

Although the bamboo harp is at a disadvantage in the rising modern folk art, it will surely usher in a broad space as the Three Gorges people explore and cherish the ancient local culture.
