American English dictionary

It is recommended to buy the luxury audio edition of Merriam-Websters University Dictionary, which is one of the three best dictionaries in the world. Its predecessor is Weber's third new international English dictionary: Freedoms.

Webster's dictionary for college students is favored by Americans mainly because it has a history of 150 years, and several generations of Americans have grown up under its nurturing. Its position in the United States is equivalent to China's Xinhua Dictionary. Someone once commented: "Webster's dictionary is epoch-making, and its appearance marks the independence of the American English system." The vocabulary of GRE test is mainly based on Webster's University Dictionary! According to statistical comparison, the phrases used by GRE antonyms are mostly the original words in the M-W dictionary.

Webster's dictionary is also very good: it is a portable version based on Webster's University Dictionary (10). * * * There are 60,000 words, which are the most commonly used words in English, involving science, technology, business and medicine. Each entry includes notes about pronunciation, spelling, meaning, etymology and synonyms. The definition of the item is concise and accurate. Common practical materials are attached to the back of the book.

These two books are both classics. The first one is ok.

Other dictionaries are not recommended if you want to learn American English.
