Many people think that the most beautiful season in Northeast China is winter, but I prefer summer. Summer in Northeast China is cool and fresh. Even in the hottest month, there is a cool breeze blowing gently in the morning and evening, and the climate is pleasant.

Brushing teeth and washing in the yard every morning, I feel very good. In the evening, the family sat under the grape trellis in the yard, enjoying the cool while eating, which was warm and harmonious. Besides, a more important reason why I like summer is because of the small garden.

In front of the house, behind the house and in the middle of the yard, a tall square courtyard wall is formed around the house with bricks or adobe, in which some vegetables that are often eaten in summer and autumn are planted, and some people plant fruit trees, grapes and flowers. If it is made of adobe, cross the branches into the earth wall to increase the height of the wall. In northeast China, this is called a curtain to prevent chickens from jumping in and eating the vegetables inside. -This is a small garden.

Every household in the northeast countryside has a small garden, a house facing south and a small yard, with scattered houses (warehouses), wells, chicken coops, pigsty and kennel. In my hometown, my family lives in the village. Our pole is at the southernmost tip, and the small garden is a vast field to the south, so our small garden extends greatly.

There are cherry trees, grape trees, sand fruit trees, my sister's favorite flowers, eggplant, beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, girls, sunflowers and corn planted around the wall. Some potatoes, pumpkins and zucchini are planted in the field outside the small garden. These vegetables are enough for daily use and a little self-sufficient.

At that time, materials were scarce, and fruits were even scarcer. All the year round, it seems that only on the thirtieth of the year can we slow down a pot of pears and a pot of frozen persimmons, and the whole family can eat them together in a brazier. Every summer, the small garden becomes my paradise; In my once barren childhood, it was the richest and most beautiful yearning. My favorite foods are cucumbers, tomatoes, grapes, girls, chimpanzees and sand fruits.

Cucumber and shallots dipped in soy sauce is a major feature of Northeast China. In our local area, cucumbers are divided into dry cucumbers and water cucumbers. Dried cucumber dipped in sauce is delicious, and the yield of water cucumber is large. Generally, it is planted in greenhouses, mixed with cold dishes and used for cooking. There are dried cucumbers in the small garden. Cucumbers have vines, so we should put them on the cucumber rack. Generally, the one closest to the root is not picked. Grandma used them as cucumber seeds, and when the skin was ripe and very old, she took them out to make seeds.

Cucumber is usually picked and hung in mid-air. They are very tender and smooth, and they are best eaten raw. Tomatoes also have shelves, and there are many varieties, including yellow persimmons, red persimmons, heart persimmons and green persimmons. Home-grown real estate, without chemical fertilizer, is very sweet and delicious, and the most important thing is "persimmon flavor". When I was a child, I was very greedy. I often look for tomatoes in the yard before they ripen.

Take a fancy to a person who wants to make a mark and come back for it the next day. Grandma called my behavior "seeking (learning)". When she sees me enter the garden, the old people will nag: What are you looking for? Wash the picked cucumbers and tomatoes and put them in cold water that has just been pumped out of the ground. They're completely cold. After a nap, they are sweet and delicious, which can quench thirst, relieve summer heat and cool down-I still miss them very much.

This method is also suitable for cantaloupe, grape, watermelon and so on. They are all soaked in underground cold water, which is especially crisp and delicious, which is incomparable to the current refrigerator.

Girls (pronounced Niang, three tones) are not very practical like other dishes. Adults disdain to eat them, and usually symbolically plant a few plants for their children. The size of the fruit is similar to that of a cherry, and the fruit is wrapped by swollen dead leaves.

Immature girls are green. Tear off the skin outside, grab it, pull it out hard, and take out the pulp inside. If you don't succeed, use a toothpick-sized straw to make a small hole in the pedicle, and then suck the juice inside a little. When the pulp is completely hollowed out, a small hollow ball with good toughness is obtained.

If you accidentally break the hard edge of the hole, you can't play. Blow up the hollowed-out peel, put it in your mouth with the opening facing outward, bite it with your upper teeth, inflate it, squeeze it out and make a squeak. It was fun. Mature girls turn yellow, sweet and sour, and have a special aroma.

There is also a kind of "bitter girl", wrapped in very bright orange-red leaves. The fruit is orange-red, but it tastes bitter and can only be sweetened after frosting. Now I think it should be because the sugar in it has increased after the temperature difference has increased.

After arriving in Jinan, there are also girls from all over the northeast who have been transported here. Maybe it's a little long on the road, or the variety has changed. In short, it tastes worse than before.

Black stars belong to the wild, and some people call them darkness. Small gardens, fields and roadsides are dotted with small white flowers everywhere. When weeding in spring, my parents will stay for us when they meet her.

Immature chimpanzee fruit is green and will turn purple when it matures. Each one is as big as a pomegranate grain, and strings of purple are transparent and shiny, which looks very attractive. It hangs on a bright green branch with two ropes tied to it. When you put it in your mouth, it melts in your mouth and soaks into your heart, which is very similar to a grape called rose fragrance.

Eat too much, your fingers are purple, your lips are purple, and your tongue is purple. At home, adults can see at a glance that chimpanzees have eaten too much, and it is inevitable to be scolded: prodigal son, eat these stars, will you eat for a while?

Shaguo is very common in Northeast China. Almost every family has sand fruit trees, and people have planted a few or a dozen trees in front of and behind the house. When the flowers bloom in spring, the buds on the fruit trees compete to open. At this time, its leaves have not yet grown, only pink flowers are bright and lively, swaying in the breeze, becoming a different kind of scenery in the spring countryside.

In autumn, sand fruits are ripe, and a string of red sand fruits are hung all over the branches. From a distance, it looks like a red agate, which makes people fondle it. The heavy fruit bends the branches and often falls to the ground. Shaguo is generally the size of a ping-pong ball, and some are as big as a small apple. Sand fruit is brightly colored, and the sunny side of the fruit is coated with half a rose glow, and the shady side is golden yellow, and some are all red or all yellow.

Picking up a bite feels sweet and crisp, with a hint of sour taste in the sweetness, and enough juice, I always feel that I am not full. It was not until I brushed my teeth at night that I found that I had eaten too much sand fruit and my teeth were sore. In August, 2005, I went to Changchun on business and met a long-lost Shaguo in the street. I took a bite, sour and sweet, and my thoughts went back to the past: standing under the tree and waiting for the day when my brothers helped me pick the fruit, as if it were yesterday.
