In which font did the Chinese character form evolve to the point where it lost most of its pictographic meaning and became an ideographic writing symbol?
There are seven unique ways to form Chinese characters: A-golden, seal script, regular, cursive, and running. During the Shang Dynasty, the characters written on tortoise shells and animal bones were called "oracle bone inscriptions". Oracle bone inscriptions are the earliest mature writing found in China, and the Chinese characters we have today evolved from Oracle bone inscriptions, and the history of writing in China began in the Shang Dynasty. Jinwen is an inscription cast on bronze vessels during the Shang and Zhou Dynasties. It is also known as Zhongdingwen (钟鼎文), because it was cast on bells and tripods. Jinwen has thick and wide strokes, rounded dots, and elegant posture. Jinwen and oracle bone script belong to the same system of writing, but it is more standardized than oracle bone script, and the structure is more neat.
In the late Western Zhou Dynasty, the form of Jinwen tended to be linear, and the strokes were more neat and well-proportioned, which was called the Big Seal Script. During the Warring States period, the scripts of various countries varied greatly. After the unification of Qin, in order to maintain the unity of the country, Qin Shi Huang accepted the suggestion of his prime minister Li Si to unify the script. Li Si organized and simplified the Chinese characters according to the Qin's standard of writing, and developed a standard writing style, which was implemented throughout the country; this new script is called the Small Seal Script. The seal script, with its rounded strokes, was obviously much more symbolic, although the hieroglyphic connotation was preserved to some extent. The Small Seal Script standardized the script, but it was still very inconvenient to write, so a simpler script called the Official Script became popular among the people. Scribe's characters are flat, with square, folded and angular frames, and thick and thin strokes, forming waves and picks, the so-called "wave and three folds, silkworm head and swallow tail". The transition from seal script to official script was an even greater change, and official script was an important turning point in the history of the evolution of Chinese characters, a watershed between ancient and modern scripts.
From then on, most of the pictographic meaning of Chinese characters was lost. In the late Han Dynasty, the official script evolved again into the regular script. The Regular Script can be used as a model for practicing characters, so it is called Regular Script. From the official script to the Regular Script character structure basically did not change, just in the writing of the official script of the wave potential picking method changed into a stereotypical hooks and sketches, so that the character shape is more square and straight, easier to write. Parallel to the Regular Script, there are Cursive Script and Running Script. Cursive character is characterized by strokes, simple, coherent, word shape unrestrained.
