As far back as Ancient Greece and Ancient China, people tried to explain the phenomena they observed using natural laws rather than supernatural reasons.

Theory

By the 17th century, scientists, represented by Isaac Newton, were trying to make predictions about a variety of new phenomena and to test hypotheses through experimentation.

Computation and simulation

The advent of high-performance computers in the second half of the 20th century allowed scientists to accurately solve large-scale systems of equations, and thus to explore areas where experimental and theoretical methods could not be applied, such as climate modeling and galaxy formation.

Data mining

Scientists use even more powerful computers to start with the data and use computer programs to mine huge databases for relationships between the data. Essentially, they are using computers to study the data to discover various rules.
