In the late Qing Dynasty, especially after the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895, innovative ideas were widely introduced into China, affecting the younger generation. In the early years of the Republic of China, with the development of Chen Duxiu Youth magazine (later renamed New Youth) and the advancement of the vernacular movement, the thoughts of freedom and resistance to traditional authority influenced students and ordinary citizens.
The New Culture Movement held high the banner of democracy and science, inspired and influenced the people of China, especially the youth of China, in the ideological and cultural fields, and fundamentally laid the ideological foundation and intellectual source of the May 4th Movement.

"Kongjiadian" refers to the spiritual, moral and cultural system formed by Confucius' theory in the long development process of China feudal society.
During the New Culture Movement, we advocated new morality and opposed old morality. Old morality refers to the traditional Confucian morality represented by Confucius. The New Culture Movement severely criticized the old morality, so it put forward the slogan of "Down with Confucius and Save Confucius". The slogan was put forward mainly from Chen Duxiu's use of the dross of Confucianism under the feudal system.
