What is the origin and implication of couplets?

The earliest prototype of couplets is "Fu Tao", that is, two gods "Shen Tu and Lei Yu" are depicted in mahogany to ward off evil spirits. Later, Fu Tao was standardized and evolved into a rectangular red board with a length of six inches and a width of three inches, which was used to hang on both sides of the gate. Later, in the Five Dynasties, the earliest Spring Festival couplets appeared in China. Today, posting Spring Festival couplets is still one of the customs of Chinese New Year. Sticking couplets express the good wishes of working people in China to ward off evil spirits and avoid disasters and welcome good luck.

The implication of posting couplets
