Origin of World Book Day

In 1995, UNESCO proclaimed April 23rd as World Book Day, the anniversary of the deaths of Cervantes in Spain and Shakespeare in England.

World Book Day on April 23 is known as World Book and Copyright Day, or World Book Day. The original idea came from the International Publishers Association (IPA), which on November 15, 1995, officially established April 23 as World Book and Copyright Day.

The purpose of its establishment is to promote more people to read and write, hoping that all people can respect and thank the masters of literature, culture, science and thought who have made great contributions to human civilization, and protect intellectual property rights. Every year on this day, more than a hundred countries around the world organize a variety of celebrations and book promotion activities . p>Many book lovers are no strangers to World Book Day. Its full name is World Book and Copyright Day, and the original idea came from the International Publishers Association.

Public information shows that in 1995, the International Publishers Association put forward the idea of "World Book Day", and the Spanish government submitted the program to UNESCO. Eventually, UNESCO declared April 23 as the "World Book Day", dedicated to the world to promote reading, publishing and the protection of intellectual property rights.

It is said that the establishment of World Book Day is also related to a legend in Catalonia, Spain: a princess was trapped in the mountains by a dragon, and George, a warrior, defeated the dragon and rescued the princess; the princess gave George a gift of a book in return. Since then, the book has become a symbol of courage and strength, and April 23 has become "St. George's Day," when people in the region give roses and books to friends and relatives.

In fact, April 23 is the anniversary of the death of Spanish writer Cervantes, as well as Shakespeare's birth and death; in addition to that, it is also the birthday of a number of literary figures, such as American writer Nabokov, French writer Maurice de Rouen, and Icelandic Nobel Prize laureate Lacsnes.

"The keynote declaration of the World Book Day mentions that it is hoped that people in the global diaspora, whether you are old or young, poor or rich ...... will respect and appreciate the masters of literary, cultural and scientific thought who have made great contributions to human civilization, and that they will all protect intellectual property rights."

In the view of Nie Zhenning, chairman of the Taofen Foundation, it was set up in the hope that by organizing all kinds of activities to enable people to read more, "its core manifesto is that they can all enjoy the pleasure of reading."
