Difference between Stacked Disk and Vertical Disk

Difference between a stacked tile disk and a vertical disk: capacity difference, cache difference.

1, capacity difference

Vertical is able to do a single disk capacity of about 1.6TB, so the market is basically not stacked 1TB or the following capacity, so the purchase of 1TB capacity mechanical hard disk do not have to consider whether it is a stacked or vertical hard disk.

2, cache difference

Generally speaking, for the stacked hard disk, the manufacturer in order to make up for the performance defects, so equipped with a larger cache, usually 128MB or 256MB, while the vertical type of the cache are smaller, usually 32MB or 64MB. but from the hard disk cache to identify whether it is stacked with drawbacks, because of high-capacity vertical hard disk, for example, more than 4TB capacity, may not be the same. 4TB or more, may also use a 256MB cache.

Notes on the use of stacked disks

1. Stacked disks are suitable for continuous, unaltered or minimally altered data storage, such as data archiving and audio/video storage.

2. Stacked disks are not suitable for operations that require frequent erasure, such as system disks, work disks, game disks, and so on. Or to put it another way, the current stacked disk technology is more like turning a hard disk into a high-capacity CD-ROM, which can be read without any problem, and modified or erased with great difficulty.

So it's no problem to use a stacked disk as a storage drive, or to use it with an SSD as long as you pay attention to it, but it's not a good idea to use it as the main hard drive of a computer that's responsible for frequent erase and write jobs.

3. In general, a mechanical hard drive larger than 1TB and a hard drive with a cache larger than 64 megabytes has a high probability of being a stacked disk, so you need to be careful when buying.
