What are some family movies?
For example, Ang Lee's The Wedding Banquet, Eat, Drink, Ozu's Tokyo Story, Yamada's The Family Affair, and movies like Life is Beautiful and Cinema in Paradise are all classics that are perfect for the family to watch.
Here are a few of my recent picks for family movies.
1. Beijing Story (Mainland China)
This is an understated but excellent old movie from the 1980s, directed by and starring Wang Zhengfang, a Beijinger who emigrated to Taiwan at an early age. The movie tells the story of a small family in a hutong that is "in touch with the outside world" after the reform and opening up of China. Through the "Sino-foreign conflict", the director picks out the unique traditions and prejudices of the Chinese people, with a very soft camera and an objective perspective, which is a rare good movie. It is worth mentioning that the age of the female lead and some of her family experiences reminded me of my own mom.
2. Prague Exercises (Czech Republic)
This rare Eastern European film is about a recently retired Prague teacher who encounters a series of middle-aged conflicts at work and at home, in a refreshingly humorous style, with a protagonist a little older than my parents, so I'm sure I can find a lot of ****ing.
3. Italian Marriage (Italy)
This is an Italian post-realist romance movie. Roughly speaking, it is neither family nor cozy, but because of the clever plot and excellent performances, I found it very watchable. The female lead, Sophia Loren, plays a woman of the world who is ostensibly charming, but essentially kind-hearted and hard-working, and with patience and taste, I think everyone can be touched by her, regardless of age or background.
4. The City That Never Sleeps (Mainland China)
A movie from the early days of the founding of the PRC, it was criticized during the Cultural Revolution. It tells the story of a Ningbo merchant family in Shanghai, going through chaotic times and several ups and downs. The main actor was Sun Daolin, a famous actor at that time, and we were also from Ningbo, so we thought it would be something to watch.
5. Goodbye, Children (France)
My parents also like to watch World War II, and we've had a lot of them in the house. This classic French WWII movie by Louis Malle is based on the director's own childhood memories, and is purely sentimental and a little sad.
