Character Experience
Paul Kochagin, born into a poor railroad worker's family, lost his father at an early age, and relied on his mother to do laundry and cooking for others to make ends meet. He was expelled from school because he hated the priest for mistreating him and spreading soot on the Easter cake at the priest's house. at the age of 12, his mother sent him to work as an odd-job man in the station canteen, where he suffered a lot of abuses, so he hated the big bosses who oppressed the poor, and detested the rich people who spent their time in the streets.
After the outbreak of the October Revolution, Polish imperialism and the reactionary Ukrainian Socialist Revolutionary Party (USRP) tried to strangle the new Soviet regime. Paul's home town of Sheptovka, Ukraine, also endured years of armed foreign intervention and civil war.
The Red Army liberated the town of Shepetovka but soon withdrew, leaving only the old Bolshevik Jukhlai to work underground in the town. Juhlai is friendly, teaches Paul English boxing, and develops Paul's simple revolutionary zeal.
