What is the definition of death in medicine? Is it the same as biological definition?
Death is not sudden, but a gradual process, which can be generally divided into three periods:
(1) Dying period Dying period, also known as dying state, is the beginning of the death process. At this stage, the functions of various systems in the body are extremely weak, and the functions of the central nervous system above the brain stem are in a state of deep inhibition, which is characterized by confusion or loss of consciousness, weakened or dull reflexes, decreased or disappeared muscle tension, weakened heartbeat, decreased blood pressure, weak or tidal breathing and intermittent breathing. The duration of the near-death period may vary with the patient's physical condition and the cause of death, and patients with sudden death may directly enter the clinical death period. This life is in a reversible stage, and after timely and effective rescue and treatment, life can be revived; Otherwise, it will enter the clinical death period.
(2) Clinical death stage In the clinical death stage, the inhibition process of the central nervous system has spread from the cerebral cortex to the subcortical part, and the medulla oblongata is in a state of extreme inhibition. It shows that the heartbeat and breathing stop completely, the pupils dilate and all kinds of reflexes disappear, but all kinds of tissues and cells still have weak and short-lived metabolic activities. This period usually lasts for 5-6 minutes, beyond which irreversible changes will take place in the brain. However, under the condition of low temperature, especially when the head cools down and the brain oxygen consumption decreases, the clinical death period can be extended to more than 1 hour.
(3) The period of biological death is the last stage of the death process. During this period, the metabolism of the whole central nervous system and organs stopped one after another, and irreversible changes occurred, making it impossible for the whole body to recover. With the progress of this period, early postmortem phenomena appeared one after another, namely, cold corpse, lividity, rigor mortis and so on. Post-mortem phenomena, that is, corpse corruption and so on.
