Can anyone help me find some Teochew dialect words?
One of the most iconic words in Teochew is t? (阴去声调,调高跟普通话第三声一样), which means "to speak". I can only write out the pronunciation in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) because I can't prove which word it is, so I'll use "啖" for now. The imperialists in Shantou have come up with "呾", but "旦", as a sound, does not correspond to its rhyming part, so it would be better to use "啖" instead. It is closer to "啖" or "談" (talk), which is the sound part of the character "炎".
The reason I say it's iconic enough is that it's rarely used outside of Chaozhou (the vast majority of people in southern Fujian use "講", Quanzhou uses "說" in urban areas, and even Hailufeng, the closest neighbor to Chaozhou, uses "講"). Even Hailufeng, the closest neighbor to Chaozhou, uses "speak". Only Anxi seems to be using it, and the word is only used in opera in Quanzhou city), even though the word originated in Quanzhou.
