What does ashur mean?

Ashur is a traditional song and dance in Zhenkang, also known as "Ajurada", which is a local custom and culture.

1, Introduction

Asura is a traditional music form integrating singing, dancing and music, which is widely spread in Zhenkang County, and also among neighboring Yongde County, Gengma County, Fengqing County, Yunxian County, Kokang Chinese in Myanmar, Tangwo in Chiang Mai, Thailand, Oyachi Chinese and Zhenkang people in Taiwan Province Province.

2. Form of performance

Ashur originated from the Hulusheng of Yunnan minority ancestors. When playing, it is usually accompanied by Sanxian, Hulusheng and flute. The performers danced while playing, followed by others, singing and dancing with the music, and singing counterclockwise.

When playing songs, male and female singers mostly improvise by asking and answering questions (commonly known as opposite plays). At the end of the sentence, everyone sings loudly "Asu is watching, Luo Xixi is swinging". This kind of singing is called ashur by local people.

According to legend, during the Three Kingdoms period, Zhuge Liang marched to Zhenkang, southwest Yunnan, and confronted the local minority troops in the villages of "Asusu" and "Luoxise". The two stockades face each other across the mountain. Zhuge Liang's troops stationed in the "Luoxise" stockade suffered heavy casualties because of their long-term operations, which did not adapt to the climate in Zhenkang, southwest Yunnan.
