How many lunar seas are there on the moon?

We see the Moon as a vast plain with our naked eye, but the dark part of the surface we see is actually the Moon's plains. There are 22 lunar seas that have been identified, in addition to some terrains called "lunar lakes" or "lunar-like seas". The vast majority of the 22 recognized lunar seas are located on the front side of the Moon. There are three on the backside of the Moon, and four on the fringes.

The lunar seas on the front of the Moon cover more than 50 percent of the Moon's surface area, and the largest of them covers an area of about 500 square kilometers, which is the combined area of nine French countries on Earth. Most of the lunar sea is roughly circular or elliptical, and is mostly enclosed by some mountain ranges around it, but it also has some oceans connected to some oceans.

In addition to the oceans, there are also lakes and marshes and bays on the Moon. The lunar oceans are generally low lying, similar to basins on Earth, and in some parts of the lunar oceans they appear particularly dark, due to the low rate of return of light to the lunar surface.
