Why do Japanese people attach importance to "Sinology" in the examination questions of civil servants?

There are roughly two reasons: 1. Japanese tradition holds that Sinology is an important indicator to measure a person's accomplishment. Up to now, if you visit Japan, you will find that Japanese speeches, whether from the Four Books and Five Classics or from Tang poetry, always bring one or two sentences of China ancient prose to show that they are also intellectuals. Although Japan fell to the west politically and culturally after the Meiji Restoration, it still retained its traditional views on self-cultivation. Therefore, it is an important means for the Japanese government to ensure that the recruited civil servants have certain qualities rather than social hooligans.
