How to propagate orchids by division?

Chinese orchids are mostly propagated by division. The time of plant division varies according to species. For winter and spring blooming species, it is better to divide the plants at the end of fall; for summer and fall blooming species, the division of plants should be carried out in the early spring before sprouting. Because of the slow growth of orchids, it can generally be divided once every 2 to 3 years.

The potting soil needs to be slightly dry when dividing plants, so it is easy to operate. Hold the pot with your hand, gently knock the mother plant out of the pot, carefully remove the soil from the roots, cut off the rotting roots and leaves, pay attention not to touch the leaf buds and fleshy roots, and then wash the soil on the roots and leaves with water, and put it in a cool place to dry for 3 to 5 hours.

When the floating water disappears and the roots become white and soft and slightly wrinkled, then cut between the pseudobulbs with a sharp, clean knife, coat the incision with charcoal ash or sulfur powder to prevent corrosion, and then plant them immediately after drying. After planting, each clump of orchids should have at least 3 or more seedlings, which is favorable to resume its growth, and will not affect the flowering at the same time.
