Russia's proven natural gas reserves are 90% on land and 10% in the sea. Natural gas is mainly distributed in West Siberia (73%) and East Siberia (7%), followed by Barents Sea, Kara Sea and Okhotsk.

Gazprom is the largest state-owned natural gas company in Russia. In 2005, Russia's proven natural gas reserves increased by 660 billion cubic meters, which was the first consecutive year that the newly added reserves exceeded the production volume for 15. Among them, the newly proven reserves of Gazprom reached 583.4 billion cubic meters.
