Basic concepts of activated sludge process.

Inject air into the domestic sewage and aerate it, keep the sediment every day and replace the fresh sewage. After this operation continues for a period of time, a yellow-brown floc, namely activated sludge, will be generated in the sewage. The biological treatment process of sewage with activated sludge as the main body is called activated sludge method.

Activated sludge plays an important role in activated sludge process. Activated sludge is inhabited by microbial communities with strong vitality and ability to degrade organic matter in water.

2. Basic process flow of activated sludge process

The basic process of activated sludge process consists of five parts: aeration tank, secondary sedimentation tank, aeration system, sludge reflux and excess sludge discharge.

The wastewater and the returned activated sludge enter the aeration tank together to form a mixed solution. The aeration tank is a bioreactor. Air is filled through aeration equipment, and the oxygen in the air is dissolved into the mixed liquid, resulting in aerobic metabolism. Then the mud-water mixture in the aeration tank flows into the secondary sedimentation tank for mud-water separation, activated sludge flocs sink to the bottom of the tank, and the water after mud-water separation is discharged from the secondary sedimentation tank as treated water. Most of the sludge settled in the secondary sedimentation tank returns to the aeration tank as reflux sludge, and the rest is discharged from the sedimentation tank, which is called surplus sludge.

It can be seen from the above process that in order to make the activated sludge process a practical treatment method, the sludge should not only have the ability of oxidizing and decomposing organic matter, but also have good coagulation and sedimentation performance, so that the activated sludge can be separated from the mixed solution and clear effluent can be obtained.
