How did the ancients view time?

The ancients first measured time by observing the sun. More than 3000 years ago, the Zhou Dynasty invented the time measuring instrument "sundial", which uses the length and direction of the shadow reflected by the sun to measure time.

The ancients called time time. The so-called one-inch time originally refers to the one-inch shadow on the sundial. The sundial divides a day and night into 12 hours, and one hour is two hours. The smallest scale of the sundial is 15 minutes today, so the ancients called 15 minutes a quarter of an hour or four minutes. In ancient times, a day was 12 hour, and an hour was eight quarters.

In ancient times, there was a simpler timing tool-burning incense, also known as "more fragrant", which was originally intended to mark time. Xiang Xiang is made of wood with uniform burning speed, and some Xiang Xiang is embedded with metal beads, which will fall off when burning at a fixed time to remind the time.
