The Cold Food Festival in Tomb-Sweeping Day used to be the biggest folk festival?

Cold food festival, also known as "Smoke-free Festival", "Cold Food Festival" and "Hundred Days Festival". This traditional festival in China falls after the summer solstice 105, and one or two days before Tomb-Sweeping Day. Cold Food Festival is the only traditional festival of Han nationality named after food customs. When the first day of the day is a holiday, smoking is forbidden and only cold food is eaten.

And in the development of later generations, activities such as sweeping graves, smoking bans, ancestor worship, cold food, inserting willows, cymbals, cuju, planting trees, swinging, flower viewing, cockfighting, poetry reading, flower viewing, cockfighting, carving chickens, tug of war, drilling wood for fire, flying kites and mowing grass have gradually increased.

The Cold Food Festival is one of the traditional festivals of the 16th National Congress of China and was once one of the most important folk festivals in China. In the long historical process, it has experienced a process from scratch and from prosperity to decline, which is a typical example of the disappearance of traditional festivals with the changes of folk customs.

Traditional festivals of the 16th National Congress of China Traditional Culture: Spring Festival, Lantern Festival, Dragon Head Rise, Shangsi Festival, Cold Food Festival, Tomb-Sweeping Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Chinese Valentine's Day, Zhongyuan Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, Double Ninth Festival, Xiayuan Festival, Laba Festival, Winter Solstice Festival, Kitchen Festival and New Year's Eve. The Cold Food Festival, which lasted for more than 2,600 years, was once called the largest folk festival in China, 358 years earlier than the Dragon Boat Festival. Although it was repeatedly banned by Zhou Ju of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Cao Cao of the Three Kingdoms, Xerox of the Later Zhao Dynasty and Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty, it was repeatedly banned and spread throughout the country. In line with public opinion, Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty issued a decree to include the tomb of the Cold Food Festival in the Kaiyuan ceremony, making it a national statutory holiday.

At present, there are three main theories about the origin of the Cold Food Festival in the research of historians and folklorists: the theory of forbidding fire in Zhou Dynasty, the theory of changing fire in ancient times and the theory of commemorating mesons. Meson theory is the most popular and accepted legend of Cold Food Festival. According to historical records, during the Spring and Autumn Period, Zhong Er, the son of the State of Jin, fled to other countries and lived in exile for 19 years. Minister Jiezitui always followed around and never gave up. Even "cutting stocks." Zhong Er tried to become a famous gentleman "Jin Wengong". But meson tui didn't want to make a fortune, so he lived in seclusion with his mother in Mianshan. Jin Wengong ordered the release of Yamakaji to force him to leave the mountain. Meson Tui was determined not to come out of the mountain and was eventually burned to death.

Jin Wengong remembered his loyalty, buried him in Mianshan, built a shrine and a temple, and ordered the prohibition of cold food on the day of Jiexiu to express his grief. This is the origin of the "Cold Food Festival". The story took place in Shanxi, China, and the day before Tomb-Sweeping Day was designated as the Cold Food Festival. On this day, the custom of eating cold food, offering sacrifices and stepping on cymbals has been handed down and accepted by the whole country.

Before the calendar reform in Tang Ruowang in the early Qing Dynasty, Tomb-Sweeping Day was scheduled for two days after the Cold Food Festival. After the reform of the Tang family, the Cold Food Festival was held the day before Tomb-Sweeping Day. The definition of the modern twenty-four solar terms follows that of the Tang Dynasty, so the Cold Food Festival is the day before Tomb-Sweeping Day. In history, the Cold Food Festival and the Qingming Festival are similar, and over time, they merged into one festival. "The Grand View of China Traditional Culture" said: "Roughly in the Tang Dynasty, the Cold Food Festival and Tomb-Sweeping Day became one." Cold food represents people's praise for loyalty, honesty and political clarity, which has been the case for thousands of years.
