The rosewood base is made of rosewood, one of the four famous trees in China. Carved by Mr. Xu, a woodcarving master, it means "Qinglong, White Tiger, Suzaku and Xuanwu", representing east, west, north and south. The combination of Qinglong, Baihu, Suzaku and Xuanwu presents a harmonious and symmetrical aesthetic feeling, which contains a strong national spirit and a distinctive oriental flavor, symbolizing the harmonious life of the Olympic family. Master Xu, a member of the woodcarving Committee of China Arts and Crafts Society, has been engaged in woodcarving for 46 years and enjoys a high reputation in the industry. The woodcarving large-scale floor-to-ceiling screens of "Hundred Birds Facing the Phoenix" and "splendid china" were collected by Beijing Arts and Crafts Museum and Nanyuan, Taiwan Province Province respectively.
