When does spring begin? Why is it called this name? What are its characteristics?
The ancients defined beginning of spring as the first of the 24 solar terms. On the day of beginning of spring, looking up at the starry sky at seven o'clock in the evening, you can see that the bucket handle of the Big Dipper points to the northeast, that is, the azimuth angle is 45 degrees, which the ancients called the direction of Gen (one of the eight diagrams).
Beginning of spring's "Li" means the beginning, and "Spring" means the season, so beginning of spring means the beginning of solar terms in beginning of spring. The agricultural proverb says "spring strikes six or nine heads" and "the first frost in winter will spring in forty-five days". There are still 45 days from the winter solstice to the ninth five-year plan, so beginning of spring is only the beginning of the sixth five-year plan.
Beginning of spring, as a festival, existed as early as the Spring and Autumn Period. At that time, there were eight festivals in a year, namely beginning of spring, Changxia, beginning of autumn, beginning of winter, Vernal Equinox, Summer Solstice and Winter Solstice. Only the Book of Rites and Annals of Huainanzi by Liu An in the Western Han Dynasty recorded 24 solar terms.
