Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces in eastern China will pickle cold dishes in the light snow season. In the Qing Dynasty, Li Tizhai described this scene in Preface to Zhi Zhu, Zhou Zhen: "After a light snow, people pickled vegetables, which is called' cold dishes'." In addition, in cold winter, glutinous rice should be fried and stored in boiling water for soaking. There is a local proverb that says, "fried glutinous rice is called fried rice, and it is stored for the winter."
After the light snow festival, some farmers began to make sausages and bacon themselves, which they only used to enjoy during the Spring Festival. Because the temperature drops rapidly after the light snow, the weather becomes dry, which is a good time to process bacon.
Some places in the south have the custom of eating rice cakes before and after light snow. In ancient times, flowers, as a traditional festival sacrifice in the south, were first used by farmers to worship the cow god. There is a saying called "burning Lulu in October", which means offering sacrifices.
During the light snow festival, people began to allow all kinds of warm clothes, hand stoves, soup and the like, and hung cotton curtains in the room to keep out the cold. Every household began to pickle and air-dry all kinds of vegetables (including cabbage and radish) and chicken, duck and fish. And extended the storage time of vegetables and meat for winter consumption. Some people will burn glutinous rice and store it.
