What are the different water requirements of oats at different stages of growth?

Oats need a lot of water. According to experts' research data, oats consume 597g per 1g dry matter, while wheat and barley consume 5 13g and 534g respectively. However, the water consumption of oats varies greatly under different atmospheric humidity conditions. Generally, the water consumption per 1g dry matter is about 300g in humid climate, while it is about 550 ~ 650 g in dry climate.

Oats have different water requirements at different growth stages. Water consumption in seedling stage accounts for 9% of the whole growth period, 70% from tillering stage to heading stage, and 20% from filling stage to maturity stage. Seeds germinate when their water absorption reaches 65% of their own weight, and the suitable soil moisture for oat sowing is 60% ~ 80% of the maximum water capacity in the field. The maximum water requirement of oats is jointing stage, which is the key period of water requirement of oats. During this period, drought will lead to a significant reduction in production. Therefore, oats must have sufficient water supply from jointing to heading stage. In the flowering and filling stage, although the water demand is relatively reduced compared with the previous stage, there must be enough water for the synthesis, transportation and grain formation of nutrients to ensure full grain filling.
