What does light snow mean?

Light snow is the twentieth solar term among the twenty-four solar terms and the second solar term in winter. The time is Gregorian calendar1October 22 or 23 165438, that is, when the sun reaches 240 degrees of the yellow meridian. Light snow is a solar term reflecting precipitation and temperature, and it is a solar term with high frequency of cold wave and strong cold air activity.

During the light snow solar term, a relatively stable meridional circulation has been established in East Asia, and low pressure or trough often appears in Siberia. When moving eastward, there will be a large-scale cold air going south, and there will be a large-scale gale and cooling weather in eastern China.

The custom of light snow solar terms

As the saying goes, "light snow pickles, heavy snow pickles." The customs of Xiaoxue solar terms include pickling pickles, tasting Ciba, drying dried fish, eating slices of soup and brewing Xiaoxue wine. Vegetables pickled with light snow are mainly pickled mustard in the north.

Some places in the south have the custom of eating Ciba before and after the light snow. Eating "planing soup" is a custom of Tujia people, and it is delicious cooked with fresh pork. Xiaoxue wine is brewed with new grain after light snow. The so-called "October rice harvest, so spring wine longevity."
