What is a collage?
Sometimes the whole work is collage, mixed with oil painting and other techniques. When a heavy three-dimensional object becomes the main body of composition, this kind of work is usually called assembly, and this term is often used in sculpture rather than painting. Collage is developed from scrapbooks.
It is an artistic decoration in the19th century, made of glued multicolor paper. This technique was adopted by the art world in about1912-1913, when Picasso and Braque began to add various common materials (newspaper clips, coupons, folded paper, glass and sawdust, lines, sand, etc.). ) to their cubist paintings.
These materials are chosen because they provide a new way to express plane and texture. Later, Dadaism artists and surrealist painters also applied some materials to their works based on their suggestive and associative values. This technique is called collage.
