Investigation on Guan Yi Lion Dance Art of Mingde Lion Dance Team

Lion dance represents auspiciousness, jubilation and good wishes in China. For thousands of years, whenever there are major festivals (such as Spring Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, Temple Fair) or big happy events (such as weddings and birthdays), people will dance to wake up the lion and express their wishes and pursuit for a better life. The folk lion dance art in Wan Yi has a long history. People like to dance lions to show good luck and happiness, which is deeply loved by the masses and has been passed down to this day. Lion dance has a broad mass base in urban and rural areas of Dongguan.

1985, Dongguan Wushu Lion Dance Association was established, and the mass lion dance activities in the city flourished, and the art of lion dance continued to improve. A number of high-level lion dance teams have emerged, participated in lion dance competitions at home and abroad, and achieved excellent results, showing the new features of the Southern Lion to Chinese and foreign audiences.

On September 29th, 1996, the lion dance team from Zhongkeng Mingde, Shipai participated in the 6th National Star Award Square Dance Competition on behalf of Guangdong Province and won the only special prize in the competition. This made him famous, and he appeared on stage in many large-scale celebrations held by the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Public Security, CCTV, provinces and cities, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Zhongkeng Village was named the hometown of Chinese folk art by the Ministry of Culture in 2000.

In April, 2000, the Lion Dance Team of Xiangtou Village in Dalang Town represented China in the Yi Hui Festival International Lion Dance Invitational Tournament and won the championship. Dongguan lion dance art enjoys a good reputation at home and abroad and is warmly welcomed by overseas people.
