Beginning of spring is the first of the 24 solar terms and one of the traditional festivals in China. The size of a spring cow is four feet high and eight feet long. The whip used to beat spring cattle is red and green. This is called spring bull shooting, and the purpose is to pray for a bumper harvest.

The practice of beating spring cattle originated in the palace. It is said that on this day, in order to celebrate the beginning of spring, the royal family will break the mud cows made in advance in front of the palace to celebrate. It is said that Duke Zhou was the first to make mud cows with spring mud, and it has been recorded in the literature that "Duke Zhou only made the beginning of spring mud cows".
