"Around the Three Spirits" is a grand festival for the Bai people in Dali, Yunnan. In their language, "around three souls" is called "top-down view". Every year, around Xiaoman, thousands of Bai people gather in full makeup and spend three days starting from Dali City and walking all the way to Erhai Lake. On the way, they will pass the Buddhist capitals-Chongsheng Temple, Shen Du-Shengyuan Temple and xian county.

The origin of "around three souls"

Legend has it that "Around Three Souls" originated in Nanzhao period of Tang Dynasty. Men, women and children of each tribe will collectively dress up and travel around Xiaoman, starting from Dali City and ending at Erhai Lake, lasting three days, sleeping for two nights, and there will be bonfires and singing at night. This kind of busy farming is a grand event, a prayer to the gods, and a spiritual and emotional sustenance. There is also a legend that "going around three souls" comes from praying for rain, because the Bai people in Dali at that time were often unable to transplant rice because of drought, and rice was the main crop of the Bai people, so the Bai people prayed to the gods before transplanting rice, hoping that the weather would be fine for a year. There is also a legend that young Bai men and women have to bypass the dense mulberry forest when dating, which originated here. Another story is the disappearance of Prince White King. In order to find the prince, people went around Erhai Lake to find him, and gradually developed into what is now called "three souls around".
