What are the characteristics of Huizhou architecture?
The basic form of Huizhou folk houses is courtyard layout, that is, a closed space composed of houses and walls. The courtyard is dominated by halls in the south, supplemented by east and west hatchbacks, with a courtyard in the middle and a concave plane. In addition to the gate, the house has only a few small windows, and the lighting mainly depends on the patio. Huizhou folk houses are often built in sets, and the structure is generally the same when they are put into sets. Huizhou folk houses are wooden structures composed of columns, beams, purlins and rafters. Beam supports, melon pillars, forks, sparrows and buckets are mostly carved and decorated with exquisite patterns and lines.
Externally, in addition to the low and sloping forms of the general ancient buildings in China, the architectural modeling of Matou gables is mainly adopted. The gables at both ends of the house are higher than the roof and roof ridge, and the roof is closed with horizontal strip gable eaves.
Huizhou folk houses also have high doorways. The higher the general doorway, the higher the status of the owner.
