Wasn't there an instrument like a pan that you struck with your hands?

HandPan, don't translate it literally as 'handheld pan'. It's an amazing instrument known as a 'steel-tongued drum'.

The HandPan was created in 2000 by two steel drum makers from PANArt AG, combined with Indian clay drums. The sound is very melodious and gives the listener a very pleasant feeling. By tapping the HandPan in different positions in a certain rhythm, the player can produce a sound that corresponds to the timbre of the drum.

Since its inception, the HandPan has been highly sought after for its UFO-like shape and beautiful sound.

At first, the instrument was called a "Hang," but because the Hang could only be tuned manually, production was so low that demand outstripped supply for a while. But with several iterations of the Hang by PANArt AG, more and more manufacturers began producing Hang-like products. But the word "Hang" had already been registered by PANArt, and many used the term HandPan to refer to this pan-like instrument.
