What are the monsters of China?

Most of the monsters that seem to be part of the Chinese tradition are collected in the Shanhaijing, which contains about 400 gods and monsters. The Classic of Mountains and Seas was not written by one person at one time, but was compiled collectively. Its content is very extensive, and it is by no means the power of individual folk. Most of its contents were accumulated through the oral tradition of shamans, and then organized into a book in the later times of the Great Unification. And the early sorcerer's duties, decided that their cultural knowledge structure, all astronomy, geography, history, religion, biology, medicine, emperor lineage and major technological inventions, etc., all know, so the content of the "Classic of Mountains and Seas" is also very mixed. Monsters, including: 19 species of animals, birds 27 species, 30 species of fish and turtles, 24 species of wood, 30 species of herbs, minerals, medicine and other 7 species, *** count 137 species.

The Shanhaijing was written between the Warring States period and the early Han Dynasty. It records 40 square countries, 550 mountains, 300 waterways, more than 100 historical figures, and more than 400 gods, monsters, and strange animals. It is a collection of geographic records, square object records, ethnic records, folklore records, witchcraft, and a large number of primitive myths.

Ancient scholars mostly believed that the Classic of Mountains and Seas was made by Xia Yu and Bo Yi, but today it seems that this is pure nonsense. Whether it is from its all-encompassing content, or from the book of the time varying from early to late, the "Classic of the Mountains and the Seas" is not out of one person's hand, is a collective compilation. Because the "Classic of Mountains and Seas" is very extensive, is the folk individual powerless to complete, even if a clan tribal leadership group can only be organized into a part of it. Due to the ancient limitations of geography and transportation conditions, it is impossible for a tribe to understand the situation of each. Therefore, it can only be accumulated through the sorcerer's oral tradition, and it will be organized into a book in the later generations of the Great Unification. And the early sorcerer's duties, decided to their cultural knowledge of the structure, all astronomy, geography, history, religion, biology, medicine, emperor lineage and major technological inventions, etc., do not know, so the content of the "Classic of the Mountains and the Seas" is very heterogeneous.

The mountains, waters, countries, peoples, animals, plants, minerals, medicines, etc., recorded in the Shanhaijing, in addition to most of them are extraordinary, there are some of them are common. However, no matter whether they are unusual or common, they are all a side of ancient history, geography and customs. Therefore, in order to understand the ancient geography of mountains and rivers, folk customs, strange beasts and birds, gods and devils, gold and jade treasures, natural minerals, myths and stories, we must not fail to read the "Classic of Mountains and Seas".

San Hai Jing (Classic of Mountains and Seas), the myths and legends preserved in the book are not only in the form of fantasy reflecting the contradiction between man and nature, but more importantly, they are positively encouraging to the people; and those myths and legends, such as the sun's daily rise and fall in the east and west, the moon's monthly roundness, the changes of the year's cold and heat, are not just a description of nature, but also the story of the ancient gods and goddesses. The accounts of nature are not only made by the ancients to explain the natural phenomena, but more importantly, to give people the courage to explore.

Nineteen species of animals, birds 27 species, 30 species of fish and turtles, 24 species of wood, 30 species of herbs, mineral medicine and other 7 species, *** count 137 species.
