The architectural form of pavilions comes from the pavilions in China traditional architecture. Pavilion is a very important type of ancient architecture in Chinese history. Long before Buddhism was introduced, pavilion buildings in China were quite common.
The so-called pavilion tower is to imitate the shape of a pavilion. It was built into a multi-storey pavilion with stairs and floors, which can be climbed. There are tower doors and windows outside each floor, waist eaves between adjacent floors, and some flat seats and railings for people to walk on.
Pavilion Tower is the mainstream of China Tower, which is more common in the vast area south of the Yangtze River and less in the north. The earliest pavilion tower in China is a square pavilion tower built in Baima Temple in Luoyang. Pavilion-style towers can worship Buddha statues, can be used by monks and so on. Some pavilions also have the function of military observation, such as Haotian Pagoda in Liangxiang, Beijing.
Building structure
The pavilion tower is characterized in that its abutment, pedestal, beam, beam, column and bucket arch are all wood structures or brick-like wood structures. Tower gates are placed at the top of the tower with different shapes. The building materials are wood or Shi Zhuan, and some towers are decorated with stone carvings or colored glass.
Some pavilions have verandahs (also called "second steps") on the first floor, which strengthens the stability of the towers and makes them more spectacular. The veranda can effectively prevent the foundation from being washed by rain and improve the service life of the tower.
