1, the origin of the Dragon Boat Festival
The fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar, commonly known as the Dragon Boat Festival, is the largest traditional Chinese summer festival, and the Spring Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival and is listed as one of the three major traditional Chinese festivals. Duan, also known as "the beginning", means "the beginning". According to the order of the earth's branches, the month of May is "Wu", and "Wu" and "Wu" are homophonic, so "Dragon Boat Festival" is also known as "Duanwu". Also known as "Duanwu". May 5, the month and the day with the five, so the ancient also known as the heavy five, and September 9, said the same meaning of heavy nine. Ancient people also "noon" as "Yang Chen", so the Dragon Boat Festival is also known as "Duan Yang". Ming and Qing Dynasties, Beijing area also called the Dragon Boat Festival "daughter festival" or "May Festival".
The origin of the Dragon Boat Festival is said to have several origins, among which the one honoring Qu Yuan, a great Chinese poet who threw himself into the Miluo River in anger more than 2,000 years ago, is the most widely circulated.
Qu Yuan was a minister at the time of King Huai of Chu and was highly regarded by him. This caused jealousy among the senior officials and the magistrate, Zilan, who slandered Qu Yuan and alienated him from the king of Chu. The king of Chu then gradually alienated Qu Yuan, and even banished him.
Seeing that Chu was on the verge of extinction and would be destroyed by Qin because of the slanderous ministers, Qu Yuan was filled with grief and indignation, and after writing his final work "Huai Sha", he threw himself into the Miluo River.
After Qu Yuan's death, the people of Chu were in great sorrow and rushed to the Miluo River to pay homage to him. And the fishermen set up boats to salvage Qu Yuan's body on the river. They also threw rice dumplings, eggs and other food into the river, hoping to feed the fish and shrimp to prevent them from eating Qu Yuan's body.
There were also people who took a jar of xionghuang wine and poured it into the river in the hope of drugging the scaly dragon in the river. It is said that a fainting dragon floated on the surface of the water, with a piece of Dr. Qu's sash on its beard. The people pulled the dragon ashore, extracted its tendons, wrapped them around the children's hands and necks, and wiped their seven orifices with xionghuang wine, so that the poisonous snakes and pests did not dare to harm the children.
Because Qu Yuan threw himself into the river on the day is the fifth day of May, since then, every year on this day, people will row a dragon boat, eat zongzi, drink andrographis to commemorate the Qu Yuan, and even also in this day, specially the calamus or wormwood inserted in the door.
