Datong Museum is a comprehensive geography museum in China. Located in the southwest corner of Datong City, Huayan Temple is located under the ancient temple of Liao Dynasty. Established in 1958 and opened in 1959. Formerly known as Datong Cultural Relics Exhibition Hall, 1963 was changed to Datong Museum. 1989, the second Datong museum opened in the exhibition hall of the bustling area outside the west gate. The whole museum covers an area of nearly 5,000 square meters, with an exhibition area of 1268 square meters. There are more than 3000 pieces of cultural relics/kloc-0, and 32 pieces of first-class/kloc-0. Most of them are local unearthed cultural relics.

The museum held exhibitions of historical relics, cultural relics unearthed in the Northern Wei Dynasty, comprehensive art exhibitions of past dynasties, stone carving art exhibitions, cultural relics exhibitions of Liao Dynasty, and a brief history exhibition of Datong. The stone carving square inkstone unearthed from the architectural site of the Northern Wei Dynasty outside the south gate of Datong City is a rare stone carving art, and the high-legged gold-plated copper cup is a precious cultural relic of the Sassanian Dynasty in Persia (now Iran). The sarcophagus beds, stone pillars and lacquer paintings unearthed from Sima Jinlong's tomb in the Northern Wei Dynasty provide valuable information for the study of ancient calligraphy, painting, carving and lacquer crafts in China. The porcelain pillow of Yingqing Guanghan Palace unearthed in Wulidian, west of Datong is a rare artistic treasure in Jingdezhen kiln in China.

Datong Museum is in the courtyard of Huayan Temple. There are 4 exhibition halls, 1 tourism service department, with an exhibition area of 238 square meters, exhibiting more than 380 historical cultural relics and animal and plant fossils. Among them are 10 meter long dinosaur spine fossils found in Gaodun Village, Xinrong District, Datong City, and the model of cultural sites found in Xiqing Porcelain Kiln, Datong City. The museum also exhibited Ding, Hu, Ge and Jian during the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, as well as more than 450 cultural relics unearthed from Sima Jinlong's tomb in Shijiazhai, the eastern suburb of Datong, some of which are extremely precious and rare works of art. ..
