What are the characteristics of Indian architecture?

The most important buildings in Indian architecture are religious buildings, and even cities have religious meanings. Mario Bussagli pointed out that "the whole construction activity of Indian architecture has the significance of a witchcraft ceremony: firstly, divination should be used to select the site, and demons, elves and other gods other than the main gods provided by the temple should be driven out of the site, so as to ensure the harmonious correspondence between the site selection and the universe". Mario Bussagli believes that the basic theme of Indian architecture is the expression of "center". This theme is equally applicable to architecture and urban planning. Every temple or palace is the axis of the universe, the sacred center, and the intersection of heaven, earth and even the underworld. Because until now, villages have been regarded as the basic unit of human habitation throughout India, expanding this central symbol has become a recurring theme in the urban plane. This concept was first embodied in the heroic city of Mohenjo.
