The background of the change of marriage and love concept in the Republic of China

Based on the historical fact that China's concept of marriage and love changed greatly during the May 4th Movement, and on the basis of relevant academic research results, this paper systematically investigates the changes of the concept of marriage and love during the May 4th Movement under the historical background of women's liberation during this period, and explores the social and historical conditions, main contents and historical reflections of the changes of the concept of marriage and love during this period, hoping to find historical traces that can be used for reference today. For thousands of years, China's traditional concept of marriage and love is based on "men are superior to women" and "husbands are superior to wives", with arranged marriage and buying and selling marriage as the main theme, and "parents' orders and matchmakers' words" as the golden rule, emphasizing "human relations" while ignoring "feelings". Such marriage deprives unmarried men and women of the opportunity and right to fall in love, and marriage excludes love, the most important foundation.
