PBN (performance navigation) performance navigation. PBN refers to the performance requirements of system accuracy, integrity, availability, continuity and function when the aircraft flies in the designated airspace or along the route or instrument flight procedure under the corresponding navigation infrastructure conditions.

The introduction of PBN reflects the transformation of navigation mode from sensor-based navigation to performance-based navigation. PBN flight plan can use two basic navigation specifications: area navigation (RNAV) and required navigation performance (RNP). Under the background of PBN technology, the positioning and guidance of aircraft will give full play to the navigation ability of airborne equipment and satellite-based and land-based equipment, so that the aircraft can run along any desired orbit.

The concept of PBN defines the performance requirements of aircraft RNAV system in terms of accuracy, integrity, availability, continuity and functionality in the specific airspace concept. The concept of PBN marks the transition from sensor-based navigation to PBN. The performance requirements are defined in the navigation specification, as well as the navigation sensors and devices that can be selected to meet the performance requirements. These navigation specifications are formulated in great detail, which is convenient for countries and operators to provide specific implementation guidance and promote global harmony and unity.

In PBN, general navigation requirements are specified according to operational requirements. Then, operators evaluate alternative technologies and navigation services that can meet these requirements. Therefore, operators have the opportunity to choose more cost-effective solutions, rather than solutions imposed as part of operational requirements. As long as the RNAV system can provide the expected performance, the rapid development of technology does not need to re-examine the operation itself. As part of ICAO's future work, it is expected that other methods to meet the requirements of navigation specifications will be evaluated and applicable navigation specifications will be incorporated in due course.

Compared with the method of establishing airspace and obstacle-crossing criteria based on navigation sensors, PBN has the following advantages:

A) Reduce the need to maintain specific sensor routes and procedures, and reduce related costs;

B) There is no need to specify specific sensor operation requirements for each improvement of the navigation system, thus avoiding high cost;

C) It is convenient to use airspace more effectively (route layout, fuel efficiency, noise reduction);

D) determine the usage mode of RNAV system;

E) Provide a limited number of navigation specifications for global use and simplify the operation approval procedures of operators.

In the concept of airspace, PBN requirements will be affected by the communication, surveillance and air traffic management environment, navigation infrastructure and the functions and operational capabilities required to meet air traffic management applications. The performance requirements of PBN also depend on which recoverable non-RNAV navigation methods can be used and what degree of redundancy is needed to ensure functional continuity.

RNAV and RNP systems are basically similar, and the main difference lies in the requirements of airborne performance monitoring and alarm. RNP specification contains requirements for monitoring and warning of airborne navigation performance, while RNAV specification does not. The regional navigation system that can meet the performance requirements of RNP specification is called RNP system.
