What does PICC mean?
PICC is the abbreviation of "PeripherallyInsertedCentralCatheter", which in Chinese means "peripherally inserted central venous catheter".
This is a medical procedure typically used for long-term intravenous treatment or monitoring, such as chemotherapy, nutritional support, or continuous monitoring of central venous pressure.
The process of PICC catheterization is as follows: 1. Preparation: The doctor will disinfect the patient's arm and find a suitable vein on the arm.
2. Local anesthesia: Inject local anesthetic at the puncture point to reduce pain during the puncture process.
3. Puncture: The doctor uses a special puncture needle to puncture the vein in the arm and insert the catheter into the blood vessel.
4. Guide Catheter: Under the guidance of X-rays or ultrasound, the doctor advances the catheter along the blood vessels until it reaches the target location, usually a large vein near the heart.
5. Fix the catheter: Fix the catheter on the skin to prevent the catheter from shifting or falling off.
6. Seal the tube: apply hemostatic material at the puncture point to prevent bleeding.
7. Postoperative care: Patients need to follow the doctor's instructions to carry out arm activities and catheter maintenance to prevent infection or other complications.
Compared with traditional venipuncture, PICC catheterization can reduce the pain caused by repeated punctures and reduce the risk of complications such as phlebitis.
However, it should be noted that after PICC catheterization, patients still need to maintain good living habits to prevent catheter-related infections or other complications.
