How many files can a folder hold in linux?

The number of first-level subdirectories in the ext3 file system of linux is 3 1998 by default, or 32,000 to be exact.

Linux has regulations on the search efficiency of cpu, and the kernel needs to be recompiled to change the number limit. There is something like this in the kernel code:

Why do you say 3 1998? This is because when mkdir creates a directory, two subdirectories are created under the directory by default, one is. Directory (representing the current directory), and the other is .. directory (representing the parent directory). These two subdirectories cannot be deleted, and there is "rm." You will be prompted "rm: Cannot delete". Or' ...' ".So 32000-2=3 1998.

There is no special limit to the maximum number of files in a single directory in the ext3 file system, which is limited by the number of inode in the file system.

In a directory, it is no problem to touch 654.38+00000 files. But it is bound to be limited by the number of inode in the file system.

Df -i /dev/sdaX or use tune2fs -l /dev/sdaX or dump 2 fs-h/dev/sdaX to check the available inodes. The output results of the last two commands are the same, but there are some errors in the available inodes obtained by DF.

There are two ways to solve the limitation of the number of inode on the Internet, as follows.

2. 1 When recreating mkfs, adjust more inodes (depending on the total number of files in the file system) and smaller block sizes (depending on the average size of each file).

2.2 Temporary solution to use loopback file system: create a large file in /usr (or elsewhere), then make a loopback file system, move the original file to this file system, and mount it in a suitable location under /usr. This can greatly reduce the number of files in /usr. But there will be a little loss in system performance.
