Development history

In the long history, small fans not only gave birth to the wisdom of China's culture and art, but also condensed the essence of ancient and modern arts and crafts, becoming a unique spectacle of China's fan style and an artistic treasure among national traditional cultural relics.

The earliest physical objects of the fan are the pieces of a feather fan with wooden handle unearthed from the Chu tomb in Tianxingguan, Jiangling, Hubei Province, and the silk-woven wooden long-handled fan of the Western Han Dynasty unearthed in Mawangdui, Changsha, Hunan Province. The long-handled fan unearthed in Mawangdui is1.76m long. It is a ceremonial fan, held by slaves or servants, to shield the sun from dust, symbolizing the authority of the master.

The fan in the mural of Princess Tomb in Zhaoling New Town in Tang Dynasty is the earliest mural found in Tang Dynasty. The inner wall of the tomb is painted with a duck egg-shaped fan with a long handle. The earliest fans were made of bamboo.

With the progress of silk textile technology, silk tribute fans (also known as round fans, silk fans and ten thousand fans) became popular. Ban Jieyu in the Han Dynasty, Xiao Yan in Liang Wudi in the Southern Dynasties, Liu Yuxi and Du Mu in the Tang Dynasty. Wang Anshi, a poet in the Song Dynasty, wrote a famous poem about a group fan.
