Taking the relevant images in the caves from the late Northern Dynasties to Sui Dynasty as examples, we interpret the significance of the traditional Chinese mythological gods and goddesses entering the Buddhist art system.
The main significance of this is to show that the Buddhist culture that came to China from the West has gradually merged with the native Chinese religion, witnessing a process of cultural fusion between the East and the West. For example, the top of the classic Cave 285 is full of Chinese gods and goddesses, such as the King of the East and the Queen Mother of the West, while the surrounding area is full of Western Buddhas. Because most of the murals at Dunhuang were painted by the artists themselves according to their own religious understanding at the time, so this is more reflective of the thinking of the people at that time. But what I can't figure out is that if there were two systems of gods and immortals in people's minds at that time, how did they divide the size of the gods in these two systems, for example, was it the Queen Mother or the King of Kings or Sakyamuni? And the painting never let these important characters appear in a painting, just appeared in a cave, so that the author may not know who is big and who is small. If a man in the past had really had two systems of gods and goddesses in his head, wouldn't he have been conflicted himself? I asked this question to a Dunhuang researcher at the time, and he explained half a dozen times.
It was probably not until later, with the emergence of the Fengshen Bang and the Journey to the West, for example, that the Chinese system of gods and immortals was basically complete, and Chinese and Western mythological figures could be said to have basically merged into one.
