Excuse me: What is the basis for intellectuals to be called "smelly Laojiu"?
1. Traditional China is a hierarchical society. China people are artificially divided into different grades according to their social status, and "Laojiu" is the ninth kind of people. Why are intellectuals called "the ninth class"? This can be traced back to the Great Yuan Empire in13rd century.
Successive governments in China have not clearly defined the social order of citizens. The government's definition of civil society in the form of documents is indeed the original creation of the Yuan Empire. After Mongolian barbarians entered China, according to their close relationship with Mongols and their "qualifications" as conquered peoples, the subjects of the empire were divided into four classes: the first class was Mongols; The second category is Semu people (Central Asians); The third is "Han Chinese", that is, China people belonging to the Jin Empire; The fourth category is "Nanren", that is, China people under the Southern Song Dynasty.
The classification mentioned above is very bold. Then, according to the professional nature, the Yuan government divided its subjects into ten classes: first-class officials (government officials), second-class officials (government employees who cannot be promoted), third-class monks (Buddhist monks), fourth-class Taoist priests (Taoists), fifth-class doctors (doctors), sixth-class workers (senior engineers and technicians), seventh-class craftsmen (low-level manual technicians) and eighth-class prostitutes.
Confucian intellectuals, who have always been respected by the traditional society in China, have been relegated to the bottom of society, and even prostitutes despised by Confucianism are inferior to beggars. In fact, even beggars can't compare with them, because the personal safety of beggars is guaranteed and intellectuals are in danger at any time. The government is not happy, so they make fun of their heads!
2. During War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression's time, the salaries of intellectuals were very small. At that time, people called it "the salary is lower than Yutai (originally referring to ancient slaves, later referring to those engaged in hard manual labor)", and the social status of college and middle school students ranked below that of Kuomintang soldiers. Some people call the Kuomintang soldier of fortune "Qiu Ba", and college students call it "Qiu Jiu".
Second, the reason why the ruling class in Yuan Dynasty despised intellectuals.
China traditional intellectuals are the product of feudal imperial examination system. Reading is only for being an official, and nothing else is useful, so "no talent is a scholar"! Being an official can not only worship your ancestors, but also fill your stomach and even make a fortune. Therefore, it can be said that the traditional intellectual class is actually a parasitic class that gets something for nothing.
In the desert area of Mongolia, everyone (including women and children) is engaged in productive labor. They really can't figure out that there are professions that specialize in reading and being an official in the world, so they look down on intellectuals and hate the imperial examination system that brought up intellectuals, so they canceled this system mercilessly. Without the imperial examination system, intellectuals can't display their specialties and have no other skills, and their situation is becoming more and more passive, and eventually they become "untouchables" who are not as good as prostitutes. In the eyes of Mongols, even prostitutes can create wealth, but intellectuals are parasites. They can do nothing but study and be officials. They are conservative, timid, disunited and quarrelsome.
Third, the origin of "smelly Laojiu"
To be exact, the word "smelly Laojiu" was coined by our beloved revolutionary mentor, Grandpa Mao Zedong. Somehow, it seems that "Laojiu" is not enough to express his old man's dislike of intellectuals. He added the word "smelly" before "Laojiu". As a result, this "hat" was worn on the heads of China intellectuals for 30 years.
In fact, intellectuals are still the most advanced stratum in contemporary China and one of the backbone forces that China must rely on in the process of modernization. Today's intellectuals will win more respect and love if they can continue to face up to their personality defects and correct them modestly.
