Located in Changsha, Hunan Province, is the key construction of undergraduate colleges and universities in Hunan Province, is the first batch of doctoral students, international students, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan students of the university, selected for the national "characteristics of the key disciplines of the project" construction of colleges and universities.

The school was founded in 1934 as Hunan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and was reorganized as Hunan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1960. In 1979, it became one of the first institutions in China to obtain the qualification of postgraduate education in traditional Chinese medicine, and was incorporated into Hunan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine by Hunan University of Science and Technology in 1990, and was merged with the Hunan Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2002. In 2002, it merged with Hunan Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and in 2006, the name was changed to Hunan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine with the approval of Ministry of Education.

Located in Shaoyang City, Hunan Province, belonging to the Hunan Province, "double first-class" high-level applied characteristics of the College, selected by the Ministry of Education, the first batch of new engineering research and practice projects, is the national "excellent doctor education training program" pilot colleges and universities, the national graduate employment typical experience. The school was founded in 1958, formerly known as Shaoyang Normal College, and was upgraded to an undergraduate level in 2002 with the merger of Shaoyang Higher Institute of Technology and its current name.
