In 1931, educators Tai Shuangqiu and Cheng Qibao contacted educators in Beijing and Shanghai to gather at Nanjing Central University and issued a manifesto calling for "improving the treatment of teachers, safeguarding their work and enhancing their training", and agreed that June 6 would be Teachers' Day, which was the starting point of Teachers' Day in China.

It was not until 1985 that the ninth meeting of the Standing Committee of the Sixth National People's Congress passed the State Council's motion on the establishment of Teachers' Day, which established September 10, 1985 as China's first Teachers' Day.
