What is a pineapple pizza?

Pineapple pizza is a food with pineapple on top, also known as Hawaiian pizza. The food is popular in places like the United States and Canada,but is considered a sacrilege and insult to traditional pizza in places like Italy.

There are several theories as to the origins of this terrain, one of which says that a Greek-born Canadian, Sam Panopolos, invented pineapple pizza and opened a restaurant in Hawaii to promote it. Another theory says that since Hawaii had just become the newest state in the U.S. and the pineapple was made from canned pineapple from Hawaii, it got its name.

Either way, pineapple pizza caused a strong backlash from Italians because they felt that pineapple and pizza didn't go together at all and that pineapple wasn't a product of Italy. They felt that it was a travesty and an offense to the pizza and food culture that originated in Italy.
